When Things Got Weird - Part 12

I shrieked. Anastasia looked shocked. "WE'RE IN THE BOYS' TOILETS!" we yelled in unison.

"We'll be in so much trouble." I said, looking around. It was gross. There was a metal wall and then a row of cubicles. There was something suspiciously yellow spattered all over the floor. Yuck! The stench was unbearable.

"How did we end up here?" Anastasia asked me.

"Maybe it's the last place you'd expect a secret passage," I replied, walking towards the filthy basins. I turned a tap on and was relieved to discover running water rather than oozing green slime.

"Maybe we're meant to go outside?" Anastasia pondered, but not before the door opened and a freckly boy walked in.

"Ha-ha! You're in the boys' toilets," he teased. We flushed red and raced out.

"That was humiliating," I said as we walked along. "Maybe we should report Mr Quarterbrain to a teacher?"

"Of course not! What would we say, that our teacher's a vampire and he chased us through a haunted theme park? Who would be stupid enough to believe that?" Anastasia pleaded.

"I guess it would sound pretty strange," I answered. "But I don't think we have any choice."

Anastasia and I sprinted towards the principal's office. When we arrived, we were puffed.

"What's the matter, girls?" Mrs Sweet asked while we caught our breath. "Why have you been missing all of your classes?"

"Well, I guess you won't believe us when we say this…" Anastasia said.

"But Mr Quarterbrain's a vampire!" I blurted out. Mrs Sweet frowned.

"No, it's true!" I shouted. "He is."

"Not to forget the giant chicken-headed monsters," Anastasia interrupted

"And my sister got hypnotised and there's green slime everywhere," I added.

There was an awkward silence. "Really?" Mrs Sweet asked, her head tilted to one side.

"Yes." For a moment I thought that Mrs Sweet believed us, but it was no use. I didn't believe myself as I said it.

"All right." Mrs Sweet said unconvincingly. "I've got a P&F meeting to organise, so it's best you go back to class."

We walked outside into the deserted corridor.

"That didn't go too well," Anastasia mumbled and then her eyes bulged, "look behind you!"

When Things Got Weird - Part 11

"Do you see what I see?" I asked Anastasia.

She didn't answer because she was ducking out of the way of giant fairy-floss creatures bouncing up and down on pogo sticks. It was hilarious! I looked up and saw many rainbows filling the sky, leading to pots of diamonds.

We were free! Free from green slime. Free from vampires. Free from chicken-headed monsters. Free from Mr Quarterbrain.

We saw a crystal clear lake with an angel fountain centrepiece and lily pads leading to it. I carefully stepped on one only to find that I bounced on it like it was a trampoline. Anastasia and I happily sprung from lily pad to lily pad until we reached the angel. Then we realised that it was spouting lemonade. We opened our mouths and filled up.

We sprinted over to an archery stand. I picked up a bow and shot daisies at the target. Next to the stand was a sign reading, FREE Pony Rides. We dashed there and saw that the ponies were unicorns! I climbed on one and trotted about the ring. After three full circles we hopped off and I saw my sister climbing a tree picking apples. Mel! I jogged over to her and hugged her tightly.

"Help me pick toffee apples, Kenz," she smiled. "I'll get the top ones and you get the ones at the bottom."

It was great to be spending time with my sister after all that I had been going through. Afterwards I bid her goodbye and saw a gigantic castle in the distance. I ran over as fast as I could and saw that the castle was actually a gigantic jumping castle! I leapt up and down, over and over when I heard Anastasia speak:

"Mackenzie, please wake up."

Now I was seriously confused. I felt dizzy and suddenly my eyes snapped open.

Anastasia was leaning over me.

"You're finally conscious!" She exclaimed. I groaned and tried to stand.

"Careful, you might have a concussion," Anastasia frowned. I told her about my dream.

"When you were flung onto the ledge you hit your head," she said. "That must be why you had such a crazy dream."

I agreed. With some help from Anastasia I sat up and looked around. I was still on the ledge. Mr Quarterbrain was nowhere to be seen. At least THAT was something to be happy about!

"Do you think you'd be all right to climb that ladder?" Asked Anastasia. That caught my attention.I stood up and limped to our escape.

When Things Got Weird - Part 10

Anastasia and I sprinted towards The Chill and hopped into a carriage. We held the handles tight as we sped down a steep slope. I glanced behind us and shouted to Anastasia over the wind, “He’s following us!”

And so he was. Running lightning fast, he was catching up to us. We headed down another slope and crossed a thin bridge above boiling hot, bubbling lava. Anastasia and I looked behind us to see him fall sideways into the lava. High-fiving each other, we started actually enjoying the ride.

Anastasia and I screamed happily as The Chill went down its biggest hill yet, our hair flying. The wind whistled through our ears. We were launched down another slope and laughed.

Then we saw movement and before we knew it, the vampire was in our carriage, baring its fangs and glaring at us. We clapped our hands to our mouths.

“I think you forgot that vampires are immortal,” the vampire hissed. Somehow his voice was familiar.

“Wait a second… Mr Quarterbrain, is that you?” I asked, exasperated. His eyes glinted menacingly.

“Miss Mackenzie, that took you almost as long as your 14 times tables,” he smirked.

“It was you – it’s been you all along. You were there in my chook pen that day. Why did you hurt my sister? What are you going to do with us?”

“Your sister deserved it. The little sneak saw me during my transformation into a vampire at University and I made her pay, as you will.”

I couldn’t describe my anger towards him at that moment. “How DARE you!” I flew at him and he pushed me away, almost lazily. I was flung over the side of the cart and held on to the rail for dear life, feeling the rising steam from the lava pit below. The ride stopped.

"Why do you want to hurt me?" I asked.

"You're too nosy for your own good," Mr Quarterbrain sneered. “Bye-bye," he whispered as he dug his nails into my fingers. I couldn't hold on any longer…

“STOP!” I looked up to see Anastasia jump on Mr Quarterbrain and I climbed back inside the ride.

Suddenly The Chill started again. Anastasia hurled punches at Mr Quarterbrain while I kicked his legs. He cackled at our stupidity. With a flick of his hand we were thrown over the side and on to a ledge. We got up and looked up in awe, realising we were not alone.

Jazzy’s In-between Reads

17. Jan, 2016

When my nose isn’t stuck in a novel, you’ll often find it in my “in-between” reads. These are books which I can pick up and flick through in a short amount of time (like when I’m supposed to be getting ready for school) and I’ll still get the reward of learning something new. Most of these have been gifts and can be found on my special shelf. I promise you they are not boring. If anything, they are a HUGE distraction!

When Things Got Weird - Part 9

Anastasia and I sprinted across the tent, the clown metres behind us. We ducked under the tiny door and quickly backed up against the wall beside it. The clown dashed right past us.

“That was close!” Anastasia puffed as soon as the clown was out of sight. “Anything could have happened to us.”

“I know. Where are we?” I asked, looking around. There were creepy hotdog stands, cobwebbed rides and empty cafes. Everything looked strangely deserted and green slime dripped off the lot.

“Isn’t this that old theme park near Mr Quarterbrain’s house?” Anastasia wondered.

“You’re right.” I muttered. “How spooky! Let’s go see where the slime’s coming from.”

We scouted around for ages, careful not to step on any goop, but couldn’t find any clues.

A crooked shadow cast over us.

“I think we’re being followed,” Anastasia said, scared.

“You are!” Said an eerie voice behind us and we slowly turned around, afraid of who we might meet next. Behind us stood a fragile old man holding a bent walking stick. “You do not know what you’re in for.”

The old man took a vile of what looked like blood from his pocket and licked his lips. He skulled the contents and grinned, revealing pointed fangs. Before our eyes he suddenly rose a full metre taller and looked much younger. I peered at him and saw that he had chalk-white skin, red eyes and a long, pointy nose. A vampire...

“RUN!” I hollered. Anastasia and I darted towards a fairy-floss stand and another vampire popped up behind it. We changed course towards the hot dog stand only to find another vampire waiting. It was only then we realised it was one in the same man – he had super speed.

We stood at the dark entrance of a spooky ride with a rusty sign above it reading, The Chill. Anastasia glanced at me and I weighed up what we would do next…
